Who are you?

I am a silly man who sometimes takes serious pictures.

No, really. Who are you?

My name is Andre Legaspi and I am a man who wears many hats. Mostly silly hats. I have done many things, nothing overly demeaning or exploitative, for money. I’ve worked at JFK airport, taught tennis, bussed tables, done extra work in TV shows and movies, worked in publishing, and even spent a few years as a freelance travel writer.

But as my family grew bigger, I found myself a more stable line of work and relegated everything else, as a side gig. The writing also took a backseat to my new favorite form of expression/story-telling: photography.

So why Photocyclist?

I was told lazy portmanteaus were essential to blog success. Also, I couldn’t decide on the main subject matter. So, yep, Photocyclist. For me, the two are inextricably linked. My favorite way of exploring a city is atop my bicycle and my favorite way to document my travels is from behind the viewfinder. Whenever I’m out on a ride, whether it’s on a multi-day tour or on my commute, I have a camera or three at the ready in case I come across anything.

Where are you based?

New York City. I’m a born and raised Queens boy. I spent a few years north of the border in Montreal but have since settled back in my home borough.

Ok. But if a picture is worth a 1000 words, why bother blogging?

After clearing years of dust off my keyboard, I finally contributed to a book in 2017 and realized I really missed writing. While I still love telling stories with my camera, I find myself wanting to share more. I want to tell stories of how certain shots came about, how specific pieces of gear played a vital role in some situations, or why I gravitate towards certain locations. And sometimes, I get a hankerin’ to be purposefully pointless.

If I want to complain about how awful one of your stories is, how do I do so?
